Malcolm Smith

Professor of Asian Law, Chuo University and former director, Asian Law Centre Barrister and Solicitor, Supreme Court of Victoria

 

Malcolm Smith is the Foundation Professor of Asian Law and Foundation Director of the Asian Law Centre, which is 15 years old in 2000. He is a graduate of Melbourne (LL.B.Hons & LL.M.) and Harvard (LL.M. & S.J.D.) Law Schools and has specialized in Japanese law, particularly in recent years in the fields of company law, securities law and finance law. In 2001 he will be teaching History and Philosophy of Law and Law and Society in Japan, and making guest appearances in Commercial Law in Asia in the undergraduate program.

Malcolm came to the Law School from the University of British Columbia, Canada, in 1987 and for five years, from 1990-95 was Director,Asia in the University, reporting to the Vice-Chancellor`s office. He is active in University bodies related to Asia and regularly teaches in Japan and Thailand. He is also a member of the Board of Management of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA).

His area of expertise includes Asian Law, Banking & Finance Law, Comparative Law, Corporate Law, International Dispute Resolution and Securities Law.
